Achieving your Growth Ambitions: A Fractional COO to help bring your vision to life

Creating space for leaders to focus on vision, growth and big ideas, while a Fractional COO focuses on the internal building blocks.

The Challenge

We’re back in 2020. wonderMakr’s growth had plateaued due to the global pandemic. In response to this external disruption, the founders dove into daily operations to steady the ship. As things began to stabilize, they recognized this was the perfect time to prepare the organization for its next phase of growth — a time to set their sights on new ambitions.

The challenge ahead was determining how best to achieve this without losing focus on day-to-day operations and client experience during such a significant external disruption.

Here’s a snapshot of wonderMakr through the lens of Sidekick’s Entrepreneurial Design ™ Framework that looks at their 4Ps – Purpose, Passion, People and Profit:

The Solution

Creativity and innovation are at the core of everything wonderMakr does — both for their clients and internal operations. To prepare for the next phase of growth, in consultation with Sidekick, they determined that it was crucial to ensure the founders had the time and space to focus on their vision, innovation, and big ideas. As they looked forward and outward, they needed a partner who could look inward establishing essential building blocks necessary to achieve their growth ambitions. This led to the need for a COO.

As a nimble company with fewer than 20 employees, and amidst external disruption, a full-time COO was neither required nor justified; however, the expertise and skill set of a COO were essential. wonderMakr brought in one of Sidekick’s co-founders, Nora, as a fractional COO to partner with the founders and leadership team on four crucial areas to achieve scalable and sustainable growth:

  1. Drive efficiency by leading the implementation of an Operating System and organizational-wide adoption plan. This included building new habits, routines, tools, processes and ways of working that aligned everyone to the company’s vision and created clarity in daily roles, responsibilities, and operations.

  2. Serve as a sparring or thinking partner to the leadership team to create their growth ambition, reality checked big ideas to get there and solved near term barriers to that growth setting the company up for future success.

  3. Develop a tangible near-term tactical plan outlining key initiatives required to establish year 1 foundations required to realize future growth. This included everything from revisiting core values, organizational design, team development and culture as a thriving team, resourcing plan (budgets, physical space, people), and marketing and business development initiatives.

  4. Design and implement marketing and business development tools, processes and content to support long-term growth and return the business to pre-pandemic performance.

The Impact

Within a year, wonderMakr was back on a growth trajectory, achieving a 33% increase in revenue. Dollars and cents aside, wonderMakr’s team and operations were in a place that has allowed them to thrive together as a high performing team and continue their pursuit of their long-term growth ambition!
